STORY
Tourmali seeks to experience joy, manifest beauty, and find contentment in the jewelled ornaments realized. Our compositions are inspired by our appreciation for the nature of gems and their cosmogony, their ephemeral, effervescent character, the symbolic significance of jewelry and its rich iconography. At a more fundamental level, Tourmali is inspired by the ability of these harlequin gems to invoke joy, surprise and wonder.
For as long as we can remember, we have loved the language of jewellery. There are few languages as fertile, fewer still as old and continually spoken. Writ in gems and precious metals, there are few tapestries as rich and illuminant, as subtle and intricate, as carefully considered and as evolutive. The landscape of the jeweled arts felt like the perfect space in which to seek and find expression. And in this vast ocean of nectar, we, the sisters Tourmali found confluence.
We grew up in India, calling Varanasi and Lucknow home for the majority of our childhood. The two cities tell different stories, but each in its own way is a microcosm of the Indian experience. Our childhood memories are awash with colour and movement, and we feel so thankful to have lived in these cities of living heritage.
Our inspirations are diverse, and often very different. Coming from opposite ends of stylistic, stylized spectrae, we seek and find synchronicity. Our ornaments are sublimates: from a confluence of ideas rise original objects of resonant beauty.
We strive to add measure to our compositions, adhere to the long known rules that govern grammar, poetry, dance, music, love and beauty, and satisfy the fluid and singular tastes of the everyday citizens of the world.
A qawwāli resonates in any of a multiplicity of tongues. But such is its devotional fire, and so resplendently evident is its ecstatic nature that its intent transfers entirely to those that stand in witness. It glistens with sincerity, leaves one breathless and entranced because it is grounded in divine love.
To us, this is a fair representation of the sacred intention that compels us, and finds manifestation in our ornaments. From a concern for the order of the world, we have come to concern ourselves with an aesthetic enjoyment of it. And Tourmali is our song of resonance, our enchanted garden of sights and sounds.
We believe that jewellery marks one’s place within the cosmos, but also allows one to stand apart within it. Our collections aim to recognize and appreciate these twin dispositions: a conscious association with the divine, and a conscious appreciation of the divine self.
